Custom Book Boxes & Slipcases

Preserving the physical integrity of a book is as vital as the binding itself. At Klepticelyx, we create archival-grade enclosures that shield your most precious volumes from dust, light, and structural deformation.

An open luxury leather clamshellhell box protecting a rare book edition.

A book is a vulnerable object. Over time, the environment—humidity, pollutants, and the simple pressure of other books on a shelf—can warp covers and degrade spines. Our custom enclosure service in Sydney is designed to provide a micro-environment of stability. Whether it is a single rare first edition or a curated set of family journals, a bespoke box ensures that the volume remains in its current state for generations to come.

We combine traditional bookbinding techniques with modern archival standards. By using acid-free materials and precision measurements, we eliminate the friction and pressure points that cause wear. From the minimalist elegance of a cloth slipcase to the fortress-like security of a leather clamshell box, our work is about the intersection of aesthetic luxury and preventative conservation.

The Creation Process

01
Measurement & Analysis: We take precise three-dimensional measurements of your volume, accounting for the "breathing room" required to prevent compression.
02
Material Selection: You choose from our curated range of goatskin leather, archival linens, or handmade papers, ensuring a visual match with the book.
03
Structural Assembly: We construct the core using acid-free greyboard, meticulously wrapping it in the chosen material with reinforced corners.
04
Final Fitting: The enclosure is tested for a snug yet effortless fit, ensuring the book can be removed without stress on the spine.

Who Requires Custom Enclosures?

Our services are tailored for collectors and owners of significant texts who recognise that a standard bookshelf is not a storage solution, but a risk. Private collectors of rare editions often require slipcases to prevent "leaning," which leads to permanent spine cocking. Historians and archivists use our clamshell boxes to isolate documents and bound volumes from atmospheric pollutants.

Furthermore, we work with artists and boutique publishers who produce limited edition art-books. For these clients, the box is not just protection; it is part of the artwork's presentation. A leather-bound clamshell box transforms a book into an object of art, providing a tactile experience of prestige and permanence.

How the Commission Works

Every project begins with a detailed consultation. Because we are dealing with unique physical objects, we require either the physical presence of the book in our Sydney workshop or high-precision measurements provided by the client. Once the dimensions are verified, we propose a material palette that complements the original binding of the book.

After the design is approved, we move to the construction phase. We employ traditional hand-folding and gluing techniques, avoiding adhesives that emit harmful vapours. The entire process is documented, and the client is informed as the project moves from the structural phase to the final covering.

What to Prepare for Your Order

To ensure a perfect fit, we ask clients to provide the exact height, width, and thickness of the volume. If the book has an existing dust jacket, please specify if the box should accommodate it. We also recommend providing photographs of the book's current condition, especially any existing damage to the corners or spine, so we can adjust the internal tolerances of the box accordingly.

For those ordering multiple boxes for a series, please provide the dimensions of the largest volume. We can either create a uniform size for the set or individual boxes for each volume to ensure a tighter fit for the smaller books.

The Final Result: What You Receive

Upon completion, you receive a bespoke enclosure that is structurally sound and chemically inert. The book will sit securely within the box, protected from UV light and dust. Along with the finished product, we provide a set of handling recommendations to ensure the longevity of both the book and its new enclosure.

You will also receive a digital record of the materials used, which is helpful for future conservation efforts. Every box is finished with a level of precision that ensures no glue seepage or uneven edges, reflecting the artisan quality of the Klepticelyx workshop.

Timeline and Lead Times

The average lead time for custom boxes is 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the complexity of the design and the availability of specific archival materials. Simple cloth slipcases may be completed faster, while multi-layered leather clamshell boxes require more curing time for the adhesives and careful hand-tooling of the leather.

We operate on a scheduled production queue. Once the 40% deposit is received, your project is slotted into our production calendar. We communicate the expected completion date clearly at the start of the process.

Exclusions: What We Do Not Provide

It is important to note that we do not provide climate-controlled storage facilities; we provide the tools (the boxes) for you to manage your storage. We do not offer mass-produced, machine-made boxes. Every piece is handcrafted in our 45 m² Sydney studio.

Additionally, we do not provide "restoration" of the book itself within this specific service. While we can refer you to our Antique Book Repair service, the creation of a box is a separate process focused on external protection rather than internal repair.

Pricing Structure and GST

Our pricing is based on the complexity of the structure and the cost of the materials. Leather is priced higher than cloth due to the sourcing of premium goatskin and the labour involved in skiving the edges. All prices are listed inclusive of the 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST) for Australian residents.

For B2B clients or international collectors, we provide invoices showing the price excluding GST. Final costs are determined after the initial measurement phase and the selection of materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a slipcase and a clamshell box?

A slipcase is an open-ended enclosure that the book slides into, primarily preventing the book from leaning. A clamshell box (or solander box) is a fully enclosed box with a hinged lid, providing total protection from light and dust.

Will the materials used damage my old book?

No. We use only archival-grade, acid-free materials. This ensures that no chemical migration occurs between the box and the book, which is critical for antique volumes.

Can you match the colour of the box to the book's original cover?

Yes, we offer a wide range of linens and leathers. We work closely with you to select a shade that either matches or aesthetically complements your volume.

Do I need to send my book to the Sydney workshop?

For the highest precision, we recommend it. However, if the book is too fragile to transport, we can work from extremely detailed measurements and photographs.
