Preserving the Art of the Written Word

Founded in 2014, Klepticelyx is a private bookbinding studio located in the heart of Surry Hills, Sydney. We operate from a dedicated 45 m² workshop where traditional craftsmanship meets modern archival standards. Our practice is rooted in the belief that books are more than mere containers of information; they are tactile objects of art and enduring vessels of personal and cultural history.

Our workshop is equipped for a wide range of technical requirements, from precision sewing to leather tooling. We work exclusively with high-grade materials, including goatskin leather, archival linen, and handmade papers, ensuring that every volume we produce or restore is built to last for generations.

Our Artisan Team

The quality of our work is a direct result of the specialised skills brought by our team. Each project is handled by a professional who understands the chemistry of paper and the physics of a secure binding.

Our Approach to Craftsmanship

We follow a disciplined process to ensure structural integrity and aesthetic harmony. Every commission begins with a detailed material consultation, where we match the binding style—whether Case-bound, Coptic, Japanese, or French—to the intended use and physical characteristics of the paper.

Our workflow is transparent and methodical. From the initial collation and sewing of signatures to the final polishing of the leather or cloth, we document the process. This allows our clients to understand the structural changes made to their volumes, particularly during complex repair work. We focus on reversible techniques in conservation, ensuring that our interventions do not compromise the original integrity of the work.

Whether we are creating a bespoke family heirloom album or binding a formal academic dissertation, our goal is to provide a finished product that balances durability with elegance. We invite you to explore our full range of services or visit our knowledge base to learn more about book anatomy and preservation.
